Whilst it has been said hundreds of times before, and there is already an unofficial Pokemon MMO out there, I’m still deciding to choose Pokemon as this weeks SPAMMO and say why I think this amazing game should also be an MMO.
What is SPAMMO?
SPAMMO (Single-players as MMO’s) is a weekly series of ideas, where I (PirateScott) will fry my brain in an attempt to bring you my opinions on which single-player games, could make great MMO’s, and how I think they should be done.
Pokemon is a game loved by all, and I don’t feel the unofficial PokeMMO lives up to the actual MMO ideals of people who have wanted this for a long time. (The game feels more like a single player with just the trading and single player duels.)
So here are my ideas for an MMO if Nintendo/Game Freak ever decided to make one (Which they more than likely never will)
Reasons for my Choice
Who doesn’t love Pokemon? From young and old Pokemon has been played by the millions, and is still being played by thousands by the day, even with it’s overly expanding army of the critters they keep releasing.
I feel it’s harder to find reasons not to love Pokemon than it is to find reasons to love it. The game is just that good that people who have played it will occasionally go back for replay value, or want to play the newer games.
Multiplayer is already on Pokemon, but I’d like to expand upon the simple Multiplayer while explaining how I think this could become an MMO.
How Could Pokemon be an MMO?
Pokemon multiplayer shows how Pokemon could be an MMO slightly, with the use of trading and battling. All I’m going to mention is how it could be expanded upon original gameplay to be an MMO.
I don’t think I’d personally want it to change from the 2D-ish style they have in the more recent games, but if it was to go along the lines of 3D then Pokemon Generations style and gameplay is probably the way to go.
The catching should be made much more difficult and progressive, such as the stronger Pokemon not showing as much until higher levels, or higher level zones. They should not be able to be caught without specific badges and/or items and even still with these items it could be difficult. (Yes, I wan’t to make people frustrated!)
Specific Pokemon could also have to be caught in a certain way, or needing locations, items, requirements to evolve.
Trading should either be capped to prevent new players getting high level Pokemon, or a system should be added where the Pokemon refuse to listen to you unless you have the right badge (like in the real Pokemon), rank or level. Possibly just stop the Pokemon being used all together until the player has whats needed.
So Pokemon already has multiplayer battles, but imagine it more along the lines of actual Pokemon tournaments, with teams of up to six, where all players can battle at once with 1-6 Pokemon out at a time per team, or once one player is defeated the next can be switched in to continue the fight.
Additional games could be added which don’t include battles such as safari competitions, similar to those in Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal. Plus races, beauty competitions, gambling like in the Pokemon arcade, along with many more.
Another possibility is to make it so the game has factions, such as the classic Team Rocket, or the more modern teams such as Team Magma, and so on.
The leveling could be kept the same as the original, or made more difficult to extend the time of the leveling before the end game content. A level system could be completely replaced in turn for another system, but I think the system already implemented is why we love the game so much.
My idea for end game content is this, 4-6 player dungeons with puzzles and random encounter battles along the way, at the end of the dungeon would be a really strong Pokemon, or a legendary Pokemon (can’t be caught) but drops an item needed to catch certain Pokemon or evolve certain Pokemon, or blocks an entrance to a spot used to evolve a certain Pokemon.
Other rewards for the instance could be rare drops, points for rank systems or currency, and the possibility to catch the Pokemon if it isn’t a legendary but it is extremely difficult to catch (4% chance at lowest health maybe?).
PVP would also be some end game content, your teams can attempt to conquer certain parts of the map.
Let’s face it, MMO’s need to make money, and if this was an MMO the best way for it to go in my opinion, is Buy to Play with cash shop for clothes, houses, maybe even game texture packs (change the appearance of Pokemon sprites and tiles to a certain game), possibly even houses and expansions. Subscription is another viable way, and as Pokemon is so popular I feel it would be successful as a subscription based game.
The End (Fin!)
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this, as I said in the Previous SPAMMO, I’m fairly new at this so any criticism or error raging is welcome, you’re free to bash this all you want as it will help me in the future.
Lots of manlove,
